This configuration is commonly used as an alternative to the Ludlum Model 19 for NORM surveys of scrap metal, industrial materials, and environmental gamma radiation. Many buyers are advised to look for a Model 19 without detailed guidance. In practice, this Model 3-97 setup performs the same screening function while offering additional flexibility and capability.

The Model 3-97 includes an internal NaI scintillation detector for low-level background and screening measurements. Unlike the Model 19, it also supports an external probe input. In this configuration, the included Ludlum 44-38 GM detector is connected and the instrument is calibrated for dose rate measurements using that probe. This allows the user to perform direct dose-based surveys while also retaining the internal NaI detector for sensitive background and source screening.
